Naomi Horiike is a Tokyo and Amsterdam-based artist whose work ranges from drawing, painting, and objects to performance and photography.
Naomi has exhibited in national and international shows and her work has been featured in numerous publications and is held in public and private collections.

◆Artistic process
As an artist, I paint primarily in abstract expressionism which simply means I use to paint and other media to express externally what’s bubbling up in my mind, body, and spirit.
My process begins by meditating and journaling, then I go directly to the canvas and begin painting without having any expectation or idea of what the final product will be. I build layer after layer…letting go & covering some things…keeping others.
I have made more fugly art than I can count but I’ve turned almost all of those paintings into something I’m proud of.
The act of creating alone has helped me heal and remember who the heck I am.
I contemplate the boundaries of traditional painting and encompasses the transitory and ephemeral nature of creation. My works stem from my physical, spiritual and emotional body and my life experiences that resonate and juxtapose with immanent reality.
I am drawn to ritualism that either derives from my imagination or that is based on literal, philosophical, or musical content.
I describe my forms as developing from the personification of objects and the exploration of archetypes, visual symbols, or energetic imprints existing in myth, ancient stories, auditory content, and the unconscious mind.
These forms are primitive, elemental morphing into the natural and the human and are open to interpretation.
Drawing is my core method of expression that I use to create my forms and which then imposed and interlace in my paintings and performance. I often tend to work with the concept of repetition and sequence with the aim to create patterns, communicate moods and feelings.
The objective is to establish a sense of visual rhythm and movement while focusing on transition and transformation, continuity and change, accident and design. In my recent work, I have made a slow transition to performance, incorporating painting, body gesture, and photography.
This experience has birthed numerous experimental collaborations with fellow artists from different disciplines with the aim of creating a unique experience of interdisciplinary work through improvisation.
